7-DAY ITINERARY - OLDER COUPLE

DAY 1: Wildlife viewing, Lava Beds, Shopping

Nibbley's Café - Breakfast
"Home of Nibbley's World Famous Oatcakes!" You'll always leave satisfied from this special place for breakfast - plate licking allowed!
2650 Washburn Way, Suite 120
Klamath Falls, OR 97603

Wildlife Viewing: Visit the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge and the Klamath Basin Birding Trail - listed as #1 on Sunset Magazine's list of birding sites in the west! Head south along the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway-All American Road to Stateline Road where you will find the Lower Klamath NWR. This was our nation's first waterfowl refuge. With 46,900 acres of shallow freshwater marshes, open water, grass and sagebrush uplands and crop lands. The 10 mile auto tour provides year-round access to great wildlife viewing opportunities. Look for Bald and Golden eagles, Peregrine Falcon, water & marsh birds, pelicans, White-faced Ibis, Snowy Egret, Sandhill Crane, Short-eared Owl, Long-billed Dowitcher, Tri-colored Blackbirds and more. The best time to photograph birds is early morning or evening. (If you have an annual pass, you can schedule a photo blind ahead of time with the Refuge Visitor Center by calling 530/667-2231).

Lava Beds National Monument: Lava Beds National Monument is just west of the Wildlife Refuge and has more than 450 lava tube caves, the greatest concentration in North America. You can explore some of the caves (a guided tour of Fern Cave is fabulous - however there are quite a few steep stairs to climb), or walk the many easy trails throughout the park. In addition, the monument encompasses the main battlefields of the Modoc War of 1872-73 and nearby is the site of the WWII Japanese Internment Camp outside Tulelake, California. The monument also includes Petroglyph Point, one of the largest panels of Native American rock art in the United States.

This is a birder's paradise where you may spot Prairie Falcons, Purple Martins, Sage Thrasher and Great-horned Owls. Located along the Pacific Flyway, early spring and fall are great times to see waterfowl such as Canada geese.

Tour Fort Klamath:
This historic area is located in the lush Wood River Valley. Fort Klamath, established in 1863, was the first military post in the region. The guardhouse (museum) contains fort relics, pictures, and houses a small gift shop - and the guide is a walking history encyclopedia. You'll hear about the history and see the gravesites of Modoc Chief, Captain Jack and three of his warriors who fought off the U.S. Army in the most expensive campaign in the West - the Modoc Indian War of 1872-1873. This was the only U.S. war where a General was killed.

Fort Klamath Fish Hatchery
Visit the hatchery, constructed in 1929, where trophy sized and fingerling Rainbow trout, Brown trout, and Cutthroat trout are raised for release into Klamath Country waters. This is a harvest program used to enhance and maintain fisheries without impairing naturally reproducing fish populations.

Head back to Weed Road, turn left after the Crater Lake B&B, then turn right on Sevenmile Road. This will take you to Westside Road towards Rocky Point for wildlife viewing on the Upper Klamath Wildlife Refuge and the Klamath Basin Birding Trail (trail #14 - #17). The refuge has 15,000 acres of freshwater marsh and open water. Excellent nesting and brood rearing areas for waterfowl including grebes, terns, American white pelicans, egrets and herons, bald eagles, and ospreys. There is a 5-mile walking trail at Crystalwood Lodge for viewing wildlife. Or pick up a box lunch at Rocky Point Resort, rent a canoe and paddle the 9.5 mile canoe trail for spectacular birding.

Once you're on Hwy 140 heading back to Klamath Falls, be sure to stop at Odessa Coffee for a hand-made milkshake.
