Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway - All American Road

Visit Crater Lake National Park, an internationally acclaimed scenic wonder. From Crater Lake National Park south to the Lava Beds National Monument, take this national class drive/hike/canoe trip through an area shaped by explosive volcanic activity.

Approximately 140 mile trip. After your visit to Crater Lake National Park, stop at Crystalwood Lodge and visit with Liz Parrish and her Iditarod sled dogs, hike the 5 miles of birding trail, then follow along Westside Road to Rocky Point Resort where you can pick up a lunch and rent a canoe to paddle through the wetlands. From Rocky Point travel Hwy 140 to Klamath Falls. You can stop for dinner and lodging at the Running Y Resort's Ranch House Restaurant. Check out our packages page for special lodging deals. Next day travel down to the Lava Beds National Monument for a day of caving and exploration of Capt. Jack's Stronghold.

Travel up Hwy 140 to Crystalwood Lodge, where you can take a morning canoe ride on Upper Klamath Lake. Before you leave the area, be sure and visit with Liz Parrish and her sled dog team who completed the 2008 Iditarod in Alaska.

Back-track to Hwy 140 and visit Lake of the Woods Resort. You will have plenty of trails and room for your dog to run. Swim, fish, or rent a boat to enjoy the beautiful lake. Have lunch at the marina grill.

Pick up take-out dinner from McDonald's and go to Moore Park Marina or Veteran's Park for a picnic. Visit the Fountains in Veteran's Park, feed the ducks, or walk the Wingwatcher's trail along Lake Ewauna.

Wildlife and Wine:

Day One:

Visit the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge and the Klamath Basin Birding Trail - listed as #1 on Sunset Magazine's list of birding sites in the west! Head south along the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway, close to many world renowned rivers for fishing (the Williamson, Wood and Klamath) and the Upper Klamath Lake which is the centerpiece of the Klamath Basin, the largest freshwater ecosystem west of the Great Lakes. The six National Wildlife Refuges scattered across the Basin host over a million birds during peak migration periods, and serve as wintering grounds for as many as 500 bald eagles.

Continue on to 12 Ranch Wines located in Bonanza, Oregon, 20 miles south of Klamath Falls. The owners were born and raised in the area. In addition to the winery, they have a ranch and raise hay, grain and cattle.

Day Two:

Breakfast at Nibbley's Café.

Continue down the byway and watch out for the unique birding sites. Binoculars and a seasonal bird list are available at the visitor center.

Head north to Crater Lake along the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway - All American Road:

Crater Lake National Park
The northern jewel of the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway, experience the deepest lake in the United States, and seventh deepest in the World. Have lunch at Annie Creek Restaurant.

Tour Fort Klamath and Upper Klamath Lake:
Heading back towards Klamath Falls, the Byway passes through Fort Klamath. This historic area is located in the lush Wood River Valley. Fort Klamath, established in 1863, was the first military post in the region. The guardhouse (museum) contains fort relics, pictures, and houses a small gift shop. Learn the history and see the gravesites of Modoc Chief, Captain Jack and three of his warriors who fought off the U.S. Army in the most expensive campaign in the West - the Modoc Indian War of 1872-1873. This was the only U.S. war where a General was killed.
