03/28/2012Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway
A Volcano to Volcano Journey. Between Lake Almanor’s southern reign in California and Crater Lake’s northern tip in Oregon, lies a region steeped in a rich history of fire and ice. Where geology and history have collided from the depth of a disrupted and eruptive past, amazing landscapes remain. On a 500 mile, two-state journey....

03/22/2012Crater Lake
Few forget their first glimpse of Crater Lake on a clear summer’s day—21 square miles of water so intensely blue it looks like ink, ringed by cliffs towering up to 2,000 feet above. The mountain bluebird, Indian legend says, was gray before dipping into the waters.

03/08/2012Crater Lake National Park
If you like the outdoors, Oregon has many places of spectacular beauty and untouched nature. One such place is Crater Lake. It is a caldera or cauldron lake created by the collapse of land following a volcanic eruption. In this case, Crater Lake was created by the collapse of Mount Mazama.

02/22/2012For 41 Years, Town Cheers Danny’s Boys
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — Danny Miles is a coach. For four decades, he has coached here, mostly basketball, through the collapse of the logging industry and the Klamath Basin water crisis, for more wins than all but three coaches at any level in the history of college basketball. He turned down other jobs, at bigger schools, in larger towns. He was fired and rehired, divorced and remarried, thought he had prostate cancer and found out he did not. At the Oregon Institute of Technology, where they slashed his athletics budget so low at times he almost quit, they also named the basketball court after him.

02/17/2012Scenic Stash
At Crater Lake National Park, where snow covers the landscape in pastel shades of white and mountain peaks tower above a deep, cobalt-blue lake, the place is so silent the only sound is your own breath. It's a wild place where cougars, lynx and pine martens hunt rabbits, voles and squirrels. Walking through this world in winter is almost surreal.

02/10/2012Klamath wings
Twenty bird watchers, some from as far away as Missoula, Mont., waited in the subfreezing dawn on the road to Bear Valley National Wildlife Refuge south of Klamath Falls for an expected flyover of hundreds of bald eagles.

02/09/2012Animal Nature
Snowy egrets roost in a Klamath Falls spruce tree, and though they're more common in the region in spring and summer, sometimes they show up in winter.

He reports that it’s the ‘early birder who catches the most spectacular wildlife show’ on a dawn patrol to see the largest gathering of bald eagles in the country at the Klamath Wildlife Refuge in southern Oregon.

That’s what makes visiting Crater Lake all the more an adventure. You are not going to get to Crater Lake unless you make it your purpose to get here. The closest airports are in Klamath Falls (60 miles from the park) and Medford (80 miles from the park). But getting there is well worth your effort!
