| | FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Multimedia art exhibit, The Traveling New Orleans Show opens February 17th, with a reception and showing in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
The Traveling New Orleans Show explores what it means to miss New Orleans for 4 weeks at the Ross Ragland Theater, 218 North 7th Street
Klamath Falls, Oregon. A reception with Cajun food will begin at 6:30 P.M. Twenty-nine pieces by former New Orleanian and Hurricane Katrina survivor, Christy Soto, explore topics such as New Orleans culture, music, festivals, traditions, food, and the largest natural disaster on U.S. soil, Hurricane Katrina. “New Orleans is a town rich in celebration, history, crime, and chaos,” explains Soto. “New Orleans receives millions of visitors throughout the year for Mardi Gras, the Jazz and Heritage Festival, and the French Quarter Festival, yet it is still referred to as a third-world country of the United States.” The city’s laissez-faire grandiosity and unique landscape has made it a popular theme for literature, plays, and movies. “New Orleans is referred to in song lyrics more than any other city in the world. The city is a muse.”
Half art exhibit and half museum exhibit, The Traveling New Orleans show is great for anyone who has visited or is interested in the city and its diverse gumbo, “—a gumbo that was only temporarily embittered by Hurricane Katrina,” says Soto.
A series of seven photos entitled “The Saddest Party on Earth” are images of the first Mardi Gras post-Katrina, when most of its inhabitants were still without electricity and water, some even still evacuated from unlivable homes. The costumes of this series show the deeply engrained New Orleans sense of humor, such as “Water Bottle Girl,” “Caution Tape Man” and “Airlift Rescue.” Read of Soto’s evacuation from the storm 12 hours before landfall in the piece, “Belated Evacuation.”
Not only does the exhibit feature poetry and literature from Soto, it also features the works of other New Orleans artists and writers. A large bead exhibit entitled, “Mamma’s Best Throws” shows the creativity of design behind parade “throws,” or beads and souvenirs that are thrown from Mardi Gras floats. A free-standing oversized multi-media piece called “three doors” makes a larger statement about the scenes that were prevalent after the hurricane. There are also images taken only weeks after Hurricane Katrina when Soto returned to the city for the first time. “In post-Katrina New Orleans, it was commonplace to see refrigerators in the street with phrases written all over them, to see the red rescue marks on doors and refuse everywhere,” explains Soto. The exhibit does not capture the putrid smell that permeated the city of New Orleans for months after the storm. “It smelled like, not just death, but the death of a city.” Soto refers to some of the oversized pieces as “Factoid Art”—large works that provide New Orleans facts such as “NOLA Terminology,” “New Orleans Festivals,” and “Summary of a Port City” are just a few fact-based art-pieces.
Multimedia artist and graphic designer, Christy Soto spent 10 years in New Orleans, Louisiana as an artist, performer, and screenwriter. She returned to her hometown of Klamath Falls, Oregon in 2007 and started the advertising agency Optilux Design. The following year she founded the artist collective The Creativity Collective that would launch the contemporary arts center, The Contemporary Arts Kitchen. Her works have been published in numerous magazines and chap books, and her plays have been produced in Oregon and Louisiana, including the notable Le Chat Noir in New Orleans. Today, her photography appears most often in the websites she designs with graphic design partner, Mike Stier. She currently is at work on a book of travel humor, Happily Ever Aftermath, the ill-conceived travels of an unwed mother. She has a 16-year-old son and is step-mother to two girls, Julianna and Gwynneth. She, along with Stier, operates Optilux Design (www.optiluxdesign.com). Christy is the CEO of The Contemporary Arts Kitchen at 809 Main Street, Klamath Falls, OR 97601 (www.creativitycollective.com).

| | Ever visit a gallery and wonder how an artist creates his work or have questions you'd love to ask if only you could talk to the creator of that wonderful piece of art? You will have your chance on Saturday, August 28th when Two Rivers Gallery presents artists and their artwork at our Second Annual Meet the Artists fundraiser. The event will be held in the Chiloquin Community Center, 140 So. 1st St., from 1 pm 'til 4 pm. In attendance this year will be a Bead Artist (Diane Eldridge), Woodworker (Wolf Hodgkinson), Origami Expert (Barbara
Turner) and award winning Quilt Artist (Joanne Bathe). Returning this year is Gan Ainm, a French Canadian band from Ashland who kept the feet tapping at last year's event. There will also be a silent auction of artwork donated by Two Rivers Gallery members. And once again a tasty variety of refreshments will be served. You won't want to miss this fun and informative afternoon. And, your attendance also supports our gallery and many local artists. Two Rivers Gallery is a non-profit gallery established to give local artists a venue for their art, and is run entirely by volunteers. Tickets are $5 per person. Contact Two Rivers Gallery at 541-783-3326 or info@chiloquinarts.com for more information.______
