While Crater Lake was formed as a result of the eruption of Mt. Mazama, local Native Americans revered the lake and kept it from being discovered until 1853 by 3 gold prospectors. They originally named it "Deep Blue Lake".
President Theodore Roosevelt declared it a national park on May 22, 1902, the fifth oldest national park.
